Last week I gave some advice to one of our readers, Los Medicos de Nueva York, about his quarterback situation. Los Medicos didn’t draft a QB until the later rounds of his draft and ended up with Matt Cassel and Cam Newton on his squad. Fortunately for him, Cam Newton has turned out to be !Cam Newton!, but going into Week 2 we weren’t so sure it would be the case. The Green Bay defense seemed it would be a little more preventative than the Arizona defense was, and given that he’s a rookie, starting Cam Newton was high risk.
My advice to Los Medicos was dump Matt Cassel in favor of Rex Grossman for a one week plug, and save Cam Newton til we know a little more about his skills. Well, Cam Newton surprised everyone by throwing for 432 yards with 1 TD and 3 INTs. He also rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown and was sacked 4 times. By comparison, Grossman passed for 291 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. His ability to rush is nonexistent, but he only got sacked once.
Grossman’s day wasn’t a disaster, just not as exciting as expected. I’ll stand by my advice, though–I think if you had asked 10 experts last week, 9 (if not 10) would’ve given the same advice as me. That said, even as a Redskins fan, or maybe especially as a Redskins fan, that’s the last time I’m going to recommend starting Rex Grossman. Though his decision making ability has improved some, it’s hard to trust him to be consistent.
Los Medicos, the good news is, now you should be able to start Newton with ease! Carolina’s got some more passer-friendly defenses in his upcoming schedule, so hopefully he can start racking up the W’s he deserves.
